Library’s Health/Medical Collection Provides Valuable Resource
The Library's Health Reference Collection provides a solid base of information on consumer health issues. While the materials found on the shelves and online aren't meant to diagnose a disease or replace doctor information, they provide a valuable resource for all patrons.
When the Poudre Valley Health Care's Health Aware Library closed its doors in November 2000, the items from that collection where donated to the Fort Collins Public Library. Among the collection you will find medical dictionaries and encyclopedias, such as the Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine, and books dedicated to medical conditions and illnesses ranging from heart disease to asthma and mental health. A few medical textbooks are included.
The Library subscribes to several medical databases that offer patrons an opportunity to search online. These include: EBSCO, an online database that provides links to sites for consumers, healthcare professionals, etc. The consumer edition searches for information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. It features searchable full text for nearly 160 journals.
For more information about the collection or databases contact Ginny Feagler at 221-6380.
